Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, fortune, progress and prosperity. She is the wife of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism .
She typically stands or sits on a lotus pedestal, while holding a lotus in her hand, symbolizing fortune, self-knowledge, and spiritual liberation.

Her four arms are symbolic of the four goals of humanity that are considered good in Hinduism: dharma (pursuit of ethical, moral life), artha (pursuit of wealth, means of life), kama (pursuit of love, emotional fulfillment), and moksha (pursuit of self-knowledge, liberation)

She is a part of the trinity (Tridevi) of Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati. All the three forms help the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva to create, maintain, and regenerate the Universe, respectively.
She represents the Rajas guna.

For mankind, 8 types of goals are necessary according to Hinduism: spiritual enlightenment, food, knowledge, resources, progeny, abundance, patience, and success. Hence there are Ashta Lakshmis (‘Eight Lakshmis’): Aadi (‘primeval’), Dhaanya (‘grain’), Vidya (‘knowledge’), Dhana (‘money’), Santaana (‘progeny’), Gaja (‘elephant’), Dhairya (‘courage’), and Vijaya (‘victorious’) Lakshmi.
